  • Bottled water will be distributed at three locations from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. This water is only for Montecito District customers in need of water. Locations  and more information can be found on the District Web Site.
  • For safety reasons, natural gas will be shut off to most parts of Montecito to repair the distribution system. It may take several days for gas to be restored to these customers. Specifically, the gas outage area includes the area north of Hwy 101 to Foothill/East Valley Road and East of Hot Springs/Olive Mill to San Ysidro Road. For additional gas outage info go to socalgas.com/Montecito or dial 1-800-GAS-2200 (1-800-427-2200). Most parts of the community of Montecito will also be without potable water, electricity, and sanitation for an unknown/extended period of time due to the storm. EVACUATION ORDERS AND WARNINGS LIFTED FOR WHITTIER, SHERPA, AND ALAMO BURN AREAS. Press Release.

Effective 12:00 PM January 13, 2018 the evacuation warning issued for areas South of Hwy 192 between Ortega Ridge Road to the Santa Barbara County Line will be lifted. This includes the communities of Summerland and Carpinteria. The evacuation order for areas east of Toro Canyon Road and North of Hwy 192 is also lifted. ( press release)

Local Recovery and Assistance Center

On Wednesday, January 17, the County opened a Local Recovery and Assistance Center to serve as a centralized, single point location for essential resources and services to help community members recover and rebuild.

The Local Recovery and Assistance Center will initially be open January 17 to February 3, 2018 at Calvary Chapel Santa Barbara, 1 N Calle Cesar Chavez, Santa Barbara, 93103 during the following hours of 11 a.m. – 6:30 p.m., Monday – Friday, and 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Saturday. The center will be closed on Sunday.

Representatives from various local, state and federal agencies will provide counseling support, resource and housing assistance, information to aid in rebuilding, permitting, hazardous materials clean-up, loss of business or employment, basic health and human services, and other topics. The Family Assistance Center, located at 21 E. Constance Avenue, Santa Barbara, will continue to serve community members through Wednesday, January 17, when the Local Recovery and Assistance Center opens.

Emergency Food Distribution Sites

The Foodbank of Santa Barbara County is distributing fresh produce and healthy groceries for those displaced from their homes or facing lost income or work due to the Montecito flood and the Thomas fire. Alternative Transportation Methods

Amtrak: Provides roundtrip rail service from San Luis Obispo to San Diego with stops in Ventura and Santa Barbara.  Refer to Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner Schedule here.

Condor Express with Island Packers: Provides round trip shuttle transportation from Santa Barbara Harbor to Ventura Harbor. Refer to shuttle schedule here.

Thomas Fire Help Air Transport: This all-volunteer group is offering free air transport (planes and helicopters) for those impacted by the Hwy 101 closure.  They are currently prioritizing those with critical jobs in the medical field and patients with critical medical needs.  For more info, visit their website.

Barring weather conditions and unforeseen circumstances, it is anticipated that most major utilities as well as County roads will be back in service in the areas of Montecito outside the areas impacted by the flood and debris flow.

District Attorney Joyce E. Dudley announced today that with the engagement of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) assistance there now exists the possibility of additional scams.

Beginning January 17, 2018, the County of Santa Barbara, in cooperation with local, state and federal emergency agencies, opened a Local Recovery and Assistance Center for victims of the Thomas Fire and January Storm incident.

The storm and mudslide event caused extensive damage. As a result, unknown amounts of potentially hazardous chemicals and untreated sewage were swept into the mudslide debris that flowed through impacted areas.

Dr. Charity Dean, Santa Barbara County’s Public Health Officer has reiterated as false the circulating rumors of the possible presence of Hepatitis C infection within the discarded debris and mud being relocated in landfills and local beaches in the county.

A Community Meeting will be held to provide the community with an update on the recovery process, the Local Recovery and Assistance Center and planning for the next storm.

The Red Cross Shelter is transitioning from Santa Barbara City College to San Marcos High School in the cafeteria at 4750 Hollister Ave., Santa Barbara, CA. 93110. The shelter opened at this location at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 15, 2018 for those displaced as a result of the recent fire and storm event.

The Sheriff’s Office is pleased to announce that 53-year-old John “Jack” Keating has been located safely in Ventura with his dog “Tiny” and is no longer on our active missing persons list. Keating is a transient and turns out was in Carpinteria and not Montecito during the storm.

Evacuation Shelter in Santa Barbara County

The Red Cross Shelter closed this morning at 6am. Residents in need can visit Red Cross at the Local Assistance Center or by calling 2-1-1. Services for those currently in need of shelter services will continue to be provided on a one-on-one basis.
